Typhoon Safety Measures for Tower Cranes: How ZOOMLION Prepares

As typhoon season approaches, ensuring tower crane safety is critical. ZOOMLION provides a comprehensive guide for safeguarding tower cranes during severe weather. These technical measures are designed to minimize structural stress and prevent equipment failure.

1. Reduce Wind Load Where Possible
Lower the crane's free-standing height or reduce the mast section above the top tie-in point. Wind force increases exponentially with height, so even slight reductions are highly effective.
Position the climbing frame at the lowest part of the mast or the highest tie-in level. Secure the climbing frame's step boards and retract the hydraulic cylinders. Use steel cables for reinforcement.
Install wind ropes in four directions at the crane base or mast top to provide extra stability.

2. Inspect and Reinforce Tie-In Systems
Check the strength of all tie-in components, including anchor bolts, adjustable screws, and support struts. Reinforcement may be necessary.
Ensure that the top two sets of tie-ins are fitted with internal struts as per safety standards.

3. Secure All Structural Connections
Verify the tightness and integrity of pins, high-strength bolts, and foundation anchor bolts to prevent structural loosening under high winds.

4. Enable 360° Free Slewing of the Crane
Disconnect the main power cable from the control cabinet to prevent cable twisting or breakage.
Install wind deflectors on the jib or counter-jib as specified in the crane's manual for different jib lengths. This allows the upper structure to rotate freely with the wind.
Check that the normally closed slew brake is released, ensuring the crane can rotate 360° without obstruction.

5. Position the Hook Safely
Raise the hook block to its highest position, approximately 10 meters from the mast, and secure the main cable to prevent it from swinging during high winds.
By implementing these precautions, tower cranes can better withstand the impact of typhoons, reducing the risk of structural failure and ensuring safety on construction sites.
