As part of the collaboration, Komatsu has brought in its drivetrain partner Wabtec to deliver an integrated solution. Together, the three companies aim to provide advanced, reliable, and optimized hybrid powertrains for next-generation mining applications.

Building on Cummins’ extensive experience in diesel engines for heavy mining and construction equipment, the partnership introduces hybrid technology into the companies’ product roadmaps to accelerate decarbonization in ultra-class haul trucks.

The joint development program will leverage the global scale and engineering resources of both Cummins and Komatsu to deliver practical, mine-ready hybrid systems. Retrofit hybrid kits will enable mining operators to reduce carbon emissions immediately while lowering total operating costs. Benefits include fuel savings through regenerative braking and shorter cycle times for improved productivity.

Cummins’ acquisition of First Mode in February 2025 has further strengthened its capabilities in hybrid and alternative power solutions, providing critical expertise to accelerate development. The first prototypes are expected to be deployed within the year.

Both Komatsu and Cummins have committed to long-term carbon reduction strategies. Komatsu is pursuing a multi-pathway approach to decarbonization, while Cummins has set a target to achieve carbon neutrality across its products and operations by 2050. Hybrid power is seen as a critical first step, delivering measurable fuel efficiency gains and cost reductions.

In China’s mining sector, Cummins has already established a strong footprint, investing in both traditional diesel power and advanced electrification technologies. By combining its global resources with First Mode’s industry knowledge, the company aims to deliver optimized solutions that help mining customers accelerate their decarbonization journey, improve fleet efficiency, and reduce operating costs.
